What to do in Changsha in three days

The city is compact and the attractions group into three clusters: river culture (Orange Isle, Xiang River), mountain culture (Yuelu Mountain, Yuelu Academy), and old-town food (Taiping Old Street, Pozi Street, Huogongdian, Wenheyou). Hunan Museum belongs to a fourth cluster on its own and deserves a half day.

River and museum cluster

Orange Isle is the visual symbol of Changsha. Walk it in the morning for clean light on the Xiang River and the Young Mao Statue. The Hunan Museum is 10 minutes away and free, with the 2,100-year-old Mawangdui Han Tombs on the third floor. After the museum, eat chopped chili fish head at Huogongdian.

Mountain and academy cluster

Yuelu Mountain and Yuelu Academy belong together. Take the cable car up, visit the academy (founded 976 AD, one of China's four great ancient academies), then walk down past Aiwan Pavilion. On the way back into town, stop at Taiping Old Street for stinky tofu and large sausage before dinner.

Old town and night cluster

Tianxin Pavilion is the only surviving Ming-dynasty city gate and pairs well with a slow walk along Du Fu River Pavilion. In the evening, walk Pozi Street into Huogongdian Fire Palace (built 1747) and finish at Wenheyou Retro Complex for crawfish. This is the night Changsha is famous for.
