About Jinzhong

Jinzhong, in central Shanxi, is the cultural heart of the Jin-merchant (晋商) civilization that built China's first banks and traded across the Ming-Qing empire. The prefecture contains 4 of Shanxi's 12 5A sites: the UNESCO-listed Pingyao Ancient City (the best-preserved 2,800-year-old Ming-Qing walled city in China with the Rishengchang Draft Bank from 1823), the Qiao Family Compound (the film 'Raise the Red Lantern' mansion), the Mian Mountain scenic area, and the Shuanglin Temple. Jinzhong is also home to the Zhangbi Ancient Fortress, the Wang Family Compound (the 'Forbidden City of the Civilian'), the Lingshi county, and the Fen-Xing county Jinshang (Jin-merchant) ancestral halls.
