About Jiujiang
Jiujiang, in northern Jiangxi, is a Yangtze-side port city framed by Mount Lu to the south and Poyang Lake to the east. For over 1,500 years it has been the natural gateway between the Yangtze's middle and lower reaches, with all of China's major water-land routes passing through. Travelers come for the UNESCO Mount Lu Cultural Landscape, the wetlands and migratory birds of Poyang Lake, the riverside Su Song-era Xunyang Tower, and the combination of Lushan mountain air, West Sea islands, and a slow old-town food scene.

Top Attractions in Jiujiang
Mount Lu (Lushan) Scenic Area
The UNESCO Cultural Landscape and the heart of Jiujiang's tourism. Mount Lu rises above the southern bank of the Yangtze with 1,800 m of granite peaks, 19 historic villas, the Guling summer town, and dozens of waterfalls. The classic route covers Hanpo Pass (sunrise), Three-Step Waterfall, Ruqin Lake, and the old villa district - allow two to three full days on the mountain.
Buy the shuttle bus pass (90 RMB extra) - the mountain is too large to walk between sights. Stay overnight in Guling for the sunrise at Hanpo Pass.
Lushan West Sea (Luhai)
A 308 sq km reservoir-lake in Wuning county west of Jiujiang, made of a thousand green islands scattered across clean water. The drive from Jiujiang takes about 1.5 hours, and the boat cruises are the main activity. Pair with the West Sea hot springs for a 2-day resort trip.
Boat tickets sold separately from entry. Spring water levels are most photogenic, autumn golden reeds are best for photos.
Xiufeng Waterfall
The waterfall Li Bai immortalized in 'Falling three thousand feet' lies 12 km south of the Mount Lu main peak. The 4A park covers the waterfall and the surrounding white-quartz peaks, with a chairlift to a viewing platform on the opposite ridge.
Combine with White Deer Grotto Academy (15 min drive) for a half-day. Spring snowmelt is the loudest flow.
White Deer Grotto Academy
The first of China's four great classical academies, founded in 960 AD and rebuilt by Zhu Xi in 1179 when he taught here. The Ming and Qing buildings are well preserved, set in a small valley south of Mount Lu. A 30-minute detour from the Mount Lu main scenic area.
Buy the Mount Lu combined ticket (160 + shuttle) to enter without an extra fee.
Xunyang River & Xunyang Tower
A 4A riverside cultural park in central Jiujiang that includes the Xunyang Tower, the Suojiang Tower (Bai Juyi's famous watchtower), Yanshui Pavilion, and the Pipa Pavilion (referenced in Bai Juyi's famous 'Pipa Xing'). The whole 3-km section along the Yangtze waterfront is walkable in half a day.
Sunset over the Yangtze from Xunyang Tower is the highlight. Combine with Yanshui Pavilion across the lake.
Stone Bell Mountain (Shizhong)
A 4A park in Hukou county on the south shore of Poyang Lake where the Yangtze and Poyang Lake meet. Su Shi wrote his famous 'Stone Bell Mountain Record' here in 1076, and the dramatic limestone cliffs above the meeting waters are still the main attraction. A 1-hour drive east of Jiujiang.
Boat ride on the lake (40 RMB extra) is the highlight - get the angle from the water on the meeting of the two bodies.
Wucheng Xi Hai Wan (West Bay)
The 4A bay and lake promenade of Wuning county town, lined with a 4 km walking and cycling path on the western shore of Zhelin Reservoir. The night-time water-and-light show (Shuiguang Xiaguang) is the best in the province and a good excuse to overnight in Wuning.
Evening visit for the light show. Bicycle rental at the entrance (20 RMB/hour).
Wucheng Hot Springs
A 3A hot spring resort at the foot of the West Sea hills, with multiple indoor and outdoor pools of various temperatures. A good relaxation day after Mount Lu or Lushan West Sea.
Hotel packages include entry. Best November through March.
Yanshui Pavilion
A 3A classical garden in the middle of Gantang Lake in central Jiujiang. The pavilion dates to the Three Kingdoms period and is the city's oldest surviving garden building. A peaceful short stop between the Xunyang Tower walk and the Jiangnan cuisine lunch.
Free entry. Sunrise or evening light is best for photos from the lakeside path.
Poyang Lake Migratory Bird Wetlands
Poyang Lake is China's largest freshwater lake and the most important wintering ground for Siberian cranes in East Asia. The Wucheng and Yongxiu county wetlands are accessible from Jiujiang by car (1-1.5 hours). The best birding season is November to March.
Bring binoculars and warm clothes. Best viewing is in the first three hours after sunrise.

What to Eat in Jiujiang
Mount Lu 'Three Stones' (Lu Shan San Shi)
Stone frog (shiji), stone fish (shiyu), and stone ear fungus (shi'er) - the three mountain delicacies of the Lushan area. The stone frog is a high-altitude forest frog, slow-cooked with ginger; the stone fish is a small river fish steamed in soy sauce.
Recommended: Any Guling-area restaurant in Mount Lu
Xunyang Sliced Fish (Xunyang Yupian)
A Jiangxi classic: white freshwater fish sliced thin, par-cooked in a wok, then smothered in a glossy sweet-sour sauce. The signature dish of the Xunyang Tower riverside area.
Recommended: Xunyang Li 1723 food court on Binjiang Lu
Jiujiang Tea Cake (Chabing)
A round flat golden pastry of flour, sesame, and tea oil, slightly sweet, with a flaky layered crust. The classic snack of old Jiujiang - buy a few at the train station for a 5-hour local experience.

Poyang Lake Hairy Crab
Poyang Lake crabs are smaller than Yangcheng Lake ones, but the roe is richer in autumn. The lakeside villages in Wucheng, Yongxiu, and Duchang run autumn 'crab feast' restaurants from October to December.

Xiushui Shaozi (Xiushui Dumplings)
A traditional dumpling from Xiushui county in northwest Jiujiang - flour skin stuffed with pork and dried radish, shaped like a sea snail shell, served in chili oil. A Hakka-influenced comfort food.

Wuning Gunzi Fish (Wuning Gunzi Yu)
Wuning county signature: small freshwater fish deep-fried crispy and served with chili and garlic. Best eaten with local rice wine.

A bean-starch noodle dish from Duchang county, served in a thick broth with dried shrimp, scallions, and chili. Locals eat it for breakfast with a fried dough stick.
