About Lijiang
Lijiang, capital of the Lijiang Naxi Autonomous Prefecture and UNESCO World Heritage site since 1997, is the most-photographed old town in China. The 800-year-old Naxi old town (Dayan) sits at 2,400 m on the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, surrounded by the 5,596-meter Yulong Snow Mountain to the north, the 5,396-meter Haba Snow Mountain to the northwest, and the headwaters of the Yangtze. The Naxi minority is one of China's most distinct ethnic groups, with the only living pictographic script (Dongba) in the world. The classic 2-day Lijiang trip covers the Old Town + Yulong Snow Mountain + Blue Moon Valley, with optional add-ons to Tiger Leaping Gorge, Lugu Lake, or the Tea Horse Road villages of Shuhe and Baisha. Lijiang Sanyi International Airport is one of Yunnan's busiest.

Yulong Snow Mountain (Yu Long Xue Shan)
A 13-peak snow range rising to 5,596 m directly north of Lijiang Old Town, the closest snow mountain to a Chinese city of this size. The Ganhaizi Cable Car (Big Cable Car) climbs to 4,506 m for the Glacier Park, the Yunshan Ping Cable Car climbs to 3,200 m for the high-alpine meadow, and the Blue Moon Valley (Baishui He) is a 4-km glacial river valley with electric-blue water at the mountain foot. The Impressions Lijiang outdoor show directed by Zhang Yimou plays at the 3,100 m Ganhaizi Amphitheater.
Book Ganhaizi cable car tickets 3-7 days in advance - daily quota is limited. The altitude is 4,506 m at the top - take altitude pills (Rhodiola 2 days before). Buy the Impressions Lijiang show ticket with the park entry for 30 RMB discount.
Lijiang Old Town (Dayan)
A UNESCO World Heritage 800-year-old Naxi old town on a 3.8 km2 grid without city walls (per the Naxi belief that a walled city blocks the wind). The Mu Mansion was the 400-year Naxi chieftain's palace (now a museum), the Four-Square Street is the historic center, the Big Water Wheel at the Lion Hill viewpoint is the iconic Lijiang photo, and the 354 bridges and canal-laced alleys create a maze of restaurants, teahouses, and Naxi craft shops. Lijiang's nightlife is the liveliest of any old town in Yunnan.
The 80 RMB 'Old Town Maintenance Fee' is technically required for entry but is only enforced at certain gates. Early morning (6-7am) is the only time the old town is truly empty. The night-time view from Lion Hill is the most-photographed Lijiang scene.
Tiger Leaping Gorge (Hu Tiao Xia)
One of the world's deepest gorges, where the Jinsha River (upper Yangtze) cuts between Haba Snow Mountain (5,396 m) and Yulong Snow Mountain (5,596 m) and narrows to 30 meters wide. The classic 2-day high-trail hike from Qiaotou to Walnut Garden is one of the world's great day-hikes, with mountain passes at 2,670 m and tea-house homestays along the way. The Upper Tiger Leaping viewpoint (Halfway Guesthouse) is the most-photographed spot.
For the half-day option, take a private car to the Upper Tiger Leaping viewpoint (2 hours from Lijiang) and walk the 700-step staircase down to the river. For the 2-day hike, start from Qiaotou and stay overnight at Halfway Guesthouse.
Lugu Lake (Lu Gu Hu)
A 50 km2 highland lake at 2,690 m on the Yunnan-Sichuan border, home to the Mosuo people - one of China's last matrilineal societies, sometimes called the 'Kingdom of Women'. The water is 12 m visibility, the pig-trough boats (zhu cao chuan) are the traditional Mosuo transport, and the Lige Peninsula and Lisha Island are the most-photographed viewpoints. The walking marriage (zou hun) tradition - where women choose partners without marriage - has made Lugu Lake a cultural curiosity.
4-5 hours drive from Lijiang. Best overnight 2 days. The Mosuo family homestays on Lige Peninsula are the cultural highlight. Plan around the annual Mosuo 'Gada' festival (Aug-Sep) for cultural immersion.
Shuhe Old Town
A 1,000-year-old Tea Horse Road village 4 km north of Lijiang Old Town, the original trading post before Dayan took over as the Naxi capital. Quieter and more lived-in than Lijiang Old Town, the Jiuding Longtan spring, the Qinglong Bridge, and the Sifang Ting (Four-Square Pavilion) are the historic heart. The Shuhe leather-craft workshops and the Naxi traditional medicine shops are the most authentic Naxi crafts left in the Lijiang area.
Combine with Baisha Old Town (3 km further north) for a 4-hour village loop. Shuhe's flea market on Saturday morning is one of Yunnan's best-curated vintage-and-craft markets.
Baisha Old Town & Murals
The original Naxi capital 8 km north of Lijiang Old Town, the home of the Ming and Qing-era Baisha Murals - a 16th-century masterpiece of Tibetan, Naxi, and Han Buddhist art combined. The murals inside the Dalu Liang are the most-photographed Naxi art, and the Liziba Han Tomb is a 1,300-year-old Naxi chieftain's burial. The backdrop of Yulong Snow Mountain makes Baisha the most-photographed Yulong viewpoint village.
Combine with Shuhe Old Town for a 3-hour northern old-town loop. The Baisha Murals are inside the Dalu Liang (Big Courtyard) - the 16th-century polychrome murals are the highlight.
Impressions Lijiang (Outdoor Show)
A Zhang Yimou-directed open-air performance starring 500+ Naxi villagers in the 3,100-meter Ganhaizi Amphitheater at the foot of Yulong Snow Mountain. The 90-minute show features Naxi folk songs, the Dongba pictographic script, the tea-horse-road caravan reenactment, and the snow-mountain backdrop. The highest-altitude outdoor show in the world.
Combine the show with a Yulong Snow Mountain day trip. The show starts at 13:30 or 14:30 depending on season - check the date carefully. Bring layers even in summer - the 3,100 m altitude is cold.
Lashihai Wetland & Tea Horse Road
A 32 km2 highland wetland 10 km west of Lijiang Old Town, the winter habitat for 100+ migratory bird species. The Tea Horse Road horseback route (3 hours) is the most popular Lijiang activity, taking riders through the wetland and into the Naxi farming villages. The Lashihai Museum covers the history of the Tea Horse Road and the Naxi horse-trade culture.
Best October-March for the migratory birds. The 3-hour horseback ride is the most-popular Lijiang half-day. Most horse-riding operators include a Naxi village lunch and a museum visit.

What to Eat in Lijiang
Lijiang Baba (Li Jiang Ba Ba)
The signature Lijiang flatbread - a layered, slightly sweet, pan-fried wheat dough. Served plain, with rose-jam, or with savory fillings (egg, scallion, ham). The classic Lijiang street snack, baked fresh at every market stall. Best eaten hot off the griddle, paired with a bowl of Lijiang chickpea jelly.

Smoked Pork Ribs Hotpot (La Pai Gu Huo Guo)
The signature Lijiang hotpot - pork ribs that have been smoked for 3-6 months with a Naxi method using local pine wood, then simmered in a clear broth with turnip, carrots, and potatoes. The smoked-pork umami is the dominant flavor, paired with the Naxi dipping sauce of chili, mint, and fermented bean. A cold-climate Lijiang comfort food, found at every Naxi family restaurant.

Chickpea Jelly (Ji Dou Liang Fen)
A Naxi specialty - jelly made from chickpea starch, served cold with a sauce of chili oil, soy, vinegar, garlic, and crushed peanuts. The jelly is smooth and slightly nutty, the sauce is bold and spicy. A perfect summer Lijiang snack, found at every Lijiang Old Town and Shuhe market. The Naxi version is firmer than the Sichuan liang fen.

Naxi Barbecue (Na Xi Shao Kao)
The Naxi version of yakitori-style skewers - small pieces of marinated pork, beef, or fish threaded onto bamboo sticks and grilled over charcoal. The marinade includes a Naxi spice mix of cumin, chili, and Sichuan pepper. Found at every Lijiang Old Town night market, typically with grilled cheese (rushan) and grilled eggplant.

Wild Mushrooms (Ye Sheng Jun)
Yunnan is home to 36% of China's wild mushroom species, and the Lijiang area is one of the prime picking grounds. June through September, restaurants offer matsutake, porcini, termite mushroom, and dozens of other varieties. The Lijiang version of wild mushroom hotpot is lighter than the Kunming one, often paired with local free-range chicken.

Yak Meat Hotpot (Ma Niu Rou Huo Guo)
A Tibetan-heritage Lijiang dish - thin-sliced yak meat quickly dipped in a clear broth or mala broth, paired with the Tibetan dipping sauce of sesame paste, fermented vegetables, and chili oil. The yak meat is leaner and slightly gamier than beef. Found in the older Tibetan-style restaurants of Lijiang Old Town, often paired with butter tea and highland barley bread.
