About Dalian
Dalian is a harbor city on the southern tip of the Liaodong Peninsula, facing the Yellow Sea and the Bohai Bay, a 19th-century Russian-leased port that became a fashionable seaside resort under Japanese and later modern development. The city combines 5A-rated Jinshitan Golden Pebble Beach and Laohutan Ocean Park, the 32-km Binhai Road coastal drive, the modern Asia-largest Xinghai Square, the Lushun Russo-Japanese War historical zone, and a Bohai-bay seafood culture. The summer is the peak season (Jun-Aug for beach and seafood), but the autumn October and the winter ice-and-snow festival also have a following. Most trips combine 3-4 days in the city with a side trip to Lushun.

Top Attractions in Dalian
Jinshitan (Golden Pebble Beach) National Tourist Resort
China's first national tourism resort, on the eastern tip of the Liaodong Peninsula 50 km from central Dalian. The 5A park combines 5 km of golden-sand beach, a geological park with 200-million-year-old rock formations, the Discovery Kingdom theme park, a golf course, and a cluster of resort hotels. The most photogenic section is the Golden Pebble Geological Park with the 'crack-stone' and the black-and-white striped beach rocks.
Drive 1 hour from Dalian, or take the light-rail Line 3 to Jinshitan Station. The Discovery Kingdom theme park is a separate ticket.
Laohutan Ocean Park (Tiger Beach)
Dalian's signature 5A marine theme park at the eastern tip of the Binhai Road. The park includes the Polar Marine World with beluga and polar bears, the Sea-Forest Zoo with rare animals, the Coral Hall, and the Bird World. The open-air Sea Forest Zoo section is the most popular for families with the Siberian tiger enclosures and the sea-lion shows.
Buy combined tickets online. Allow at least 4 hours to cover all 5 sections. Pair with Binhai Road's eastern end.
Xinghai Square (Xinghai Guangchang)
The largest city square in Asia, on the Xinghai Bay in central Dalian. The 1.1 million-sq-m square is the city's main civic gathering space, with the Century Sculpture Park (footprints of 200 famous Chinese hands and feet), the Binhai Road seafront, and the seafront seafood-restaurant street. The night-time music fountain is the city's most popular date spot.
Free entry. Sunset is the best time. The Xinghai Bay bridge and the World Trade Center tower are the most-photographed view.
Binhai Road (Binhai Lu)
Dalian's 32-km coastal road that curves around the southern tip of the Liaodong Peninsula from Xinghai Bay in the west to Laohutan in the east. The road has separate bike and pedestrian lanes, with 19 scenic overlooks, several beaches, and the Russian-Japanese heritage mansions on the way. A bike-ride here is the signature Dalian experience.
Rent a shared bike at Xinghai Square (15 RMB/hour). The 'Northernmost 18 km' section from Xinghai to Fujiazhuang is the most photogenic.
Mount Dahei (Dahei Shan)
A 663-meter forested coastal mountain at the western tip of the Liaodong Peninsula, where the Yellow Sea and the Bohai Bay meet. The 4A park is Dalian's closest nature escape, with Tang-dynasty temple ruins, plum-blossom fields in early spring, autumn maple foliage, and a panoramic view of both seas from the summit.
Best in March (plum blossom) or October (maple). Drive or Didi from central Dalian, allow 30 min to the trailhead.
Dalian Discovery Kingdom
The largest theme park in northeast China, inside the Jinshitan resort. The 4A park is a Korean-imported theme-park brand with 30+ rides, the Lost Kingdom 'Journey to the Center of the Earth' indoor section, a 4D cinema, and a water park in summer. The most popular rides are the 'Magic Castle' 4D experience and the 'Midnight Express' coaster.
Combined tickets with Jinshitan are cheaper. Allow a full day. Best for kids 6-15 and theme-park fans.
Lushun (Lushunkou) Scenic Area
The historical Russian-leased-port and Japanese-colony port at the southern tip of the Liaodong Peninsula, a 1-hour drive south of central Dalian. The 4A park includes the Russo-Japanese War cemetery, the East Fortress and West Fortress WWII fortifications, the Lushun Botanical Garden, the naval port (closed to public), and the Lushun Museum.
Free entry to the scenic area. The Russo-Japanese War cemetery and the Lushun Museum are essential. The naval port requires a separate military authorization.
Lushun Museum (Lushun Bowuguan)
A world-class museum of modern Chinese history in the heart of the Lushun scenic area, housed in the original 1900 Russian colonial building. The 4A museum covers the British-German-Japanese occupations, the Russo-Japanese War, the Manchurian colonial period, and the 1945 Soviet liberation. The building itself is a Russian Baroque landmark.
Free entry with ID. Allow 3 hours - the museum is dense. The Russo-Japanese War Hall on the second floor is the highlight.
Bingyu Valley (Bingyu Gou)
The 'Little Guilin of Liaodong', a 2,000-hectare karst gorge and reservoir area 130 km northeast of central Dalian. The 4A park has river boat tours, cliff walking paths, seasonal cherry-blossom and red-maple foliage, and a series of dramatic karst formations. A full-day trip from Dalian, often combined with the Xianrendong cave.
Day-trip from Dalian (2.5h each way). Best in May (cherry blossom) or October (red maple). Self-drive or join a tour.
Dalian Forest Zoo
A 100-hectare forested zoo in a hilly peninsula overlooking the bay, near Xinghai Bay. The 4A zoo is laid out in a hilly forest with the Asian and African species in semi-open enclosures, the giant panda house, and the polar bear exhibit. A quieter, more family-friendly alternative to the bigger Laohutan.
Combined tickets with Binhai Road and Xinghai Square are common. Allow 3 hours. Less crowded in late afternoon.

Bohai Seafood Hotpot (Hai Xian Guo Dun)
Dalian's signature cold-water seafood hotpot - a small copper pot of clear broth with mantis shrimp, abalone, sea cucumber, oysters, and fish slices, served with sesame sauce. The cold Bohai waters produce some of China's firmest, sweetest seafood.

Liaoning Sausage (Liaoning Hongchang)
