About Shijiazhuang
Shijiazhuang, capital of Hebei Province and the largest city in the North China Plain south of Beijing, is the geographic and transport center of the province. Once a modest railway town, it grew into a 11-million-resident industrial city in the 20th century, and is now paired with a 1,600-year-old satellite heritage city - Zhengding - just 12 km north, where the UNESCO-style Longxing Temple (Song dynasty, 1,000+ years old), the Hebei Museum, and the Anji Bridge (Zhaozhou Bridge) - the world's oldest open-spandrel segmental arch bridge from 605 AD - create one of China's most underrated heritage clusters. The west of the city borders the Taihang mountain range with the 1,500-m Cangyan Mountain and the 1,800-m Tuoliang Mountain weekend escapes. South of the city, the Xibaipo red-memory site preserves the CCP's last rural command post before Beijing (1948).

Longxing Temple (Zhengding)
A 1,000-year-old Song-dynasty Buddhist temple in Zhengding county, 12 km north of Shijiazhuang downtown, the top Trip.com Hebei attraction (4.8/5, 4,204 reviews). Founded in 586 AD and rebuilt in 1052, the temple houses the 21.3-meter bronze Thousand-Armed Guanyin - the tallest bronze Guanyin in China - and the oldest surviving wooden Buddhist structure in North China (the Moni Hall, 1052 AD). The temple complex is one of Hebei's must-sees.
Combine with a half-day Zhengding Ancient City loop. The Moni Hall (摩尼殿) is the architectural highlight - the cross-shaped main hall is unique in Chinese Buddhist architecture. Allow 2-3 hours.
Hebei Museum

Zhaozhou Bridge (Anji Bridge)
A 1,400-year-old Li Chun stone-arch bridge in Zhao County, 42 km southeast of Shijiazhuang, the world's oldest open-spandrel segmental arch bridge (built 605 AD). The 50-m single-span bridge was 800 years ahead of European stone-arch bridge design and is the masterpiece of Tang-dynasty civil engineering. UNESCO-listed in the World Heritage tentative list. Zhengding Ancient City

Cangyan Mountain

Shijiazhuang Beef Banmian (Niu Rou Ban Mian)
Shijiazhuang's signature noodle dish - hand-pulled wide noodles in a clear beef-broth soup, topped with thin-sliced stewed beef, bok choy, and chili oil. The 24-spice beef-broth is the family secret of each restaurant. Found at every Shijiazhuang noodle shop and the night-market food stalls on Huitong Road.

Donkey Burger (Lv Rou Huo Shao)
Hebei's most-iconic street food, a meat-stuffed baked flatbread. The slow-stewed donkey meat is shredded and stuffed into a freshly-baked crispy flatbread with green peppers and chili sauce. Both Baoding and Hejian versions are famous, and the Shijiazhuang street vendors serve the Hejian version. Found at every Zhengding Old Town and Shijiazhuang city food street.

Golden Phoenix Braised Chicken (Jin Feng Pai Zi Ji)

Found at every Shijiazhuang traditional restaurant. The original is at the Jinfeng Pai restaurant chain, founded in 1908.
